Special Session : International Year of Light

Abstract

  • Planning:IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach(OAO)
  • Moderator:Sze-leung Cheung(OAO)

In this special session, hosted by the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach we will show the "Losing the Dark" Planetarium show, dedicated to raising awareness to light pollution and to the preservation of the night sky. The show will then be followed by a LIVE Skype Talk connection Japan to the United States. The session will host a panel discussion composed by Constance Walker from the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) and International Dark Skies Association (IDA) Board of Directors; Carolyn Collins Petersen, Director and Producer for Loss Ness Productions, and Nobuaki Ochi from Toyo University and leader of IDA Tokyo. The discussion will be moderated by Sze-leung Cheung, International Outreach Coordinator for IAU. This is a special session dedicated to the celebration of the International Year of Light 2015 and International Astronomical Union special program Cosmic Light focused on preserving the night skies.

Invited Lecturer Profiles

Special Lecture 1

Mr. Lars Lindberg Christensen

Lars is a science communication specialist heading the ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD) in Munich, Germany. He is responsible for public outreach and education for the La Silla-Paranal Observatory, for ESO's part of ALMA (the largest and most expensive ground-based astronomical project currently under construction), for the European Extremely Large Telescope (the largest optical telescope in planning), for ESA’s part of the Hubble Space Telescope and for the International Astronomical Union Press Office.

Special Lecture 2

Dr. Carter Emmart

Carter Emmart is the Director of Astrovisualization at the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History, in New York City. He directs space show productions based on immersive data visualization for the Hayden Planetarium within the Rose Center. Carter oversees software development for interactive use of the 3D universe atlas known as the Digital Universe, which can now be networked between planetariums and classrooms worldwide. The Swedish company SCISS grew out of these efforts in a series of internships he hosted from Linkoping University. Starting astronomy courses at the age of ten in the old Hayden, Carter grew up in a family of artists and got his BA in geophysics from the University of Colorado, and his doctorate from Linkoping University, Sweden. He has had careers in architectural modeling, technical illustration and science visualization at NASA Ames Research Center and the National Center for Atmospheric Research prior to joining the staff at AMNH.
