The Short Film Competition Guidelines

This year will be the 3rd year the International Festival of Scientific Visualization has been held (pre-event was held in 2009) to introduce high quality scientific films widely and provide an opportunity for the public to see them.
The 3rd IFSV committee announces to hold the short film competition for the purpose of fostering the creators who would challenge to make high quality scientific films. The Committee is calling for entries for your fulldome or flat-screen films related to science. We are looking forward to your entries and the films you developed originality and creativity in.

Entry Period

  • June 1(Fri) ~ July 20(Fri) (Your entry must arrive by 17:00 on July 20), 2012

Theme

  • Connecting with others through science

Guidelines

  • A fulldome or flat-screen film in accordance with specifications stated below
  • A film related to the theme
  • A group entry or an individual entry will be accepted.
  • There are no restrictions as to production techniques.
  • Total running time must be less than 5 minutes.
  • The film must be unscreend at the theatres, science museums, planetariums, or elsewhere.

Specifications

Fulldome film

  • Size: 2400pix x 2400pix dome master data
  • Format: QuickTime (MOV) codec: Mpeg4
  • Sound: 2ch 48KHz/16bit uncompressed WAV file must be prepared separately.

Flat-screen movies

  • Resolution: SD or HD standard
  • Format: AVI、QuickTime、MP4 (The compression format must be described in the case of the format AVI or Quicktime.)
  • Sound: 2ch 48KHz/16bit uncompressed PCM file included in the film file

Screening process

Candidates are selected after the application documents are examined in advance at the secretariat and go to the finals.
The judging panel appointed by the organization will evaluate the films based on the following criteria: Technical Achievement, Scientific and Artistic Creativity, Originality, and potential.

  • The finals, the showing, and the award ceremony will be held at the Dome Festa:

  • Your entry will be complete when you submit the entry form and your work for the period of the entry to the following address.

  • Please make sure to send only one media appropriate to the size of the data. (Sending a several DVD-R disks is not accepted.)
  • The media or the data storage will be returned after the showing upon your request.

Entry Agreement

  • The committee reserves no right to utilize the participants’ works for a purpose other than this festival.
    The award winners may permit the committee to utilize the works for the promotion and screening.
  • The committee never utilize the personal information acquired for a purpose other than this festival. However, every award winning work will be shown publicly with the name of the winner and winner’s company.
  • The entrants are considered to accept all the competition rules when they submit the entry forms and the works.
